About the Book

For as long as I can remember, I was fighting. Fighting to keep up in school while other kids made it look easy. Fighting the voice in my head that started the second I opened my eyes every morning—you’re a loser, you’re a joke, today is going to go wrong. And then, in fifth grade, OCD showed up and became the biggest bully of my life. Not the kind you see on TV. My OCD meant checking light switches in sets of four—four switches, four time each, because stopping at three meant heart pounding, sweaty palms, and pacing until I gave in. It meant five hours of homework a night because I had to re-read and re-check every single thing. It meant apologizing constantly, seeking reassurance from everyone around me, never being able to turn off my brain. I was exhausted. I was ashamed. And yet I worked hard, built my toolbox, and eventually turned my grades around.I became a teacher and for eighteen years I showed up for kids who reminded me of who I used to be: scared, misunderstood, needing just one adult in their corner. But it wasn’t easy. There were difficult students, colleagues who seemed bent on sabotaging my reputation, and my own constant inner battles. Then came the day I had nothing left. I broke down in the main office, huddled on the floor, crying and apologizing to everyone around me. That was the end of the line—and somehow, the beginning of my redemption. The Invisible Fight is the story of everything that led up to that—and what came after: a partial hospitalization program that felt like school for your mental health, support from family and friends, moments where I saw proof that my work with students had made a difference, and overall, the slow, humbling process of learning to live, love, and even thrive with OCD.I wrote this book because I know I’m not the only one in this fight. If that’s you—or someone you love—I want you to hear this: it’s okay to not be okay. Asking for help is not weakness. It is the bravest thing you will ever do. You don’t have to fight the invisible fight alone.
